Overview
Why People CMM?
With the radical growth that the Indian economy has experienced
over the last few years, people management issues have gained significance.
History has it that the growth of organizations depends on three
principal dimensions: Technology, Processes and People. While a
lot of emphasis has been laid on the first two dimensions, the third
- undoubtedly the most influencing factor on business growth - has
gone somewhat unnoticed. The result is directly reflected on all
studies - talent recruitment challenges, high personnel turnover,
burnout and various other factors impeding the growth of organizations.
What is the People CMM?
The People Capability Maturity Model® (People CMM®) is a
roadmap for implementing workforce practices that continuously improve
the capability of an organization's workforce. Each progressive
level of the People CMM produces a unique transformation in the
organization's culture by equipping it with more powerful practices
for attracting, developing, organizing, motivating, and retaining
its workforce. The People CMM establishes an integrated system of
workforce practices that mature through increasing alignment with
the organization's business objectives, performance, and changing
needs.
The People CMM® is characterized by a holistic approach to people-related
issues. Rather than look at traditional Human Resource interventions
in a reactionary, piecemeal fashion, the People CMM® framework enables
organizations to incrementally focus on key process areas and lay
foundations for improvement in workforce practices. Unlike other
HR models, the People CMM® has the fundamental requirement that key
process areas, improvements, interventions, policies and procedures
be institutionalized across the organization, irrespective of function
or level. Therefore, all improvements permeate through the organization,
thereby ensuring consistency of focus with an emphasis on a participatory
culture embodied in a team-based environment, where individual innovation
and creativity are encouraged.
Structure of the People CMM
The People CMM consists of five maturity levels that establish successive
foundations for continuously improving individual competencies,
developing effective teams, motivating improved performance and
shaping the workforce the organization needs to accomplish its future
business plans. Each maturity level is a well-defined evolutionary
plateau that institutionalizes new capabilities for developing the
organizations workforce. By following the maturity framework, an
organization can avoid introducing workforce practices that its
employees are unprepared to implement effectively.
